My visit to Trondheim, Norway

My visit to Trondheim, Norway

By Sujata Dabolkar

From September 11-14 , I visited Trondheim which is beautifully situated in the middle of Norway by the Trondheim fjord to attend the international Nature conference: Minerals and Materials for a Sustainable Future organized by Geological Survey of Norway (GSN), and others. In the month of August, I got an invitation letter from the conference organizers Mr. Tom Heldal, director of Geological resources and environment (GSN). It was my first visit to any foreign country. My route covered Goa to Doha, Doha to Oslo (Capital of Norway) and from Oslo to Trondheim. My journey started on 10th September from Dabolim international airport covering around 2598 kms to Hamad international airport, Doha. I reached Doha where the travelers were transferred internally from one QA flight to another. My next destination was Oslo, a journey of 6.40 hours covering distance of 4960 kms. At Oslo, I was directed to the security check followed by immigration procedure before boarding domestic Scandinavian flight. I landed on the Trondheim airport with a smiling face. Journey from Vaernes airport by Flybus to hotel was remarkable. I was amazed with the beauty of countryside, huge patches of fields, clean roads, beautiful wooden houses and huge tunnels. I reached hotel Scandic Nidelva after 30 minutes. From hotel I informed my family, friends and my guide Nandkumar Kamat. The five star hotel Scandic Nidelva lies at the bank of the river Nidelva. From the window of my room I was able to enjoy the scenic beauty of city and river Nidelva. Outside the hotel you see a beautiful bridge spanning the west part of the city to Solsiden shopping area. People in Trondheim are very health conscious. You can see them walking, jogging, running, cycling early morning. The conference was held in the same hotel. Around 100 delegates from different parts of the world had registered. At the end of the sessions in the poster session I presented my work with ten other delegates. My work on biomining in Goa was highly appreciated by scientists and students. I found time to visit different parts of the city and studied the urban ecology, landscaping and life. Daytime temperature ranges from 15-17 degrees Cel , night falls around  9 pm with temperature falling to around 8-9 degrees. The oldest of the wooden/ stone houses along the River Nidelva date back to the 18th century and  serve as an important part of the Norwegian cultural heritage. Another centre of attraction in city is the AD 1681 Old Town Bridge known as a "Portal of Happiness". The Nidaros Cathedral church located in the middle of the city which I visited is the most important Gothic monument in Norway. It was Northern Europe's most important Christian pilgrimage site during the Middle Ages. Trondheim is well maintained with clean streets, designed with flower pots and attractive benches. Among the many many monuments and statues Carl Adolf Dahl who developed Trondheim city and port is prominent. There are also maritime museum, water parks and musical instrument museum. This neighbourhood on the east side of the Nidelva river features old timber buildings. Bakklandet is a charming mixture of houses, shops and cafés. The people of Trondheim prefer coffee, fruit juices, eggs, pastries and milk products for breakfast, fish and salads for lunch and dinner. Norway is ranked first on OECD Better Life Index. Trondheim is also famous for fish markets, fishing and boat sightseeing. Trondheim city is a smart city and digitalized. Trondheim transportation system works on the online apps. For return journey I booked a bus online from city centre to Vaernes airport and then took a flight to Copenhagen early  morning when a beautiful sunrise was observed. From midair I could also see the 16 kms long Oresund Bridge, which provides a quick and easy connection to Sweden by car, train or bus. After an hour at Copenhagen airport I checked in Doha bound QA flight for a 6 hours journey to Doha. At Doha airport I spent my five hours in studying the airport and people and finally took a flight to Goa and reached the Dabolim airport at 3 am. The memories of this journey will be cherished throughout my life. Ranked by UNDP as World’s No. 1 country, I am looking forward to visit Norway again.
